Abstract
We challenge the widely accepted cinematic-ludic model implemented in today's games and propose a new model which introduces elements of on-stage performance to gaming. We'll call this the Theatrical-Ludic Model. Players, actors and the audience act and interact with one another using full-body costumes as physical interfaces that are simultaneously functional, performative and narrative tools. We use these performative interfaces for character control to couple the virtuality of computer games with the physicality of stage theatre. We demonstrate the use of physical and theatrical performance as a method of storytelling using six game acts that implement this model in a variety of ways.
