352, Spring 2021: Internet Technology Assessments

Assessments

Your final grade for the course will be based on the following weights:

This course uses absolute grading thresholds (no curve).

In this course, any materials mentioned as due on a specific date are due at 8 pm Eastern Time on that date.

Please read the note on academic integrity on the course home page.

Weekly quizzes (30%)

There will be 8 weekly quizzes on Canvas. Quizzes are pre-scheduled and will be announced when they are available. See the schedule for when quizzes will be due on the syllabus page.

We will drop the two lowest scores from the 8 quizzes. The remaining quizzes each carry 5% weightage towards your final grade.

You will have 40 minutes to finish a quiz once you begin it, and you may take the quiz any time until it is due. There will be no extensions or make-ups for the Canvas quizzes.

Quizzes are closed-book.

Two Mid-term exams and the Final exam (10% + 10% + 20%)

The two mid-terms and the final exam are online (on Canvas) and open-book. You may only use the course textbook, lecture materials, and your own notes. Calculators are allowed.

This course is graded with absolute grading thresholds. The behaviors and grades of others in the class do not impact your own. All submitted answers must be the result of your own thought and work. Please do not search the Internet or use question-answering services to respond to the exam questions. Do not collaborate with others.

The two mid-terms will each be 1.5 hours long and can be taken in any 1.5-hour block within a pre-announced window of 3 days (for each mid-term). The final exam will be 2.5 hours long and can be taken during any 2.5-hour block within a pre-announced window of 5 days. See the schedule for details.

Programming Projects (30%)

There will be three programming projects.

You will work in groups of two throughout the semester. Your partner can belong to any of the sections handled by this instructor (that would be sections 1 and 2). You will work with the same partner throughout the semester, so choose wisely. We will disallow changing partners except under very compelling circumstances. Allowing a change is up to the discretion of the instructors.

Both the solution program and a write-up (details TBA) will be required for each project. The projects will use the Python language, shell scripting, and basic Unix terminal manipulations. You must be comfortable using basic data structures like dictionaries and vectors.

Projects are handed-in via Canvas. You are given ample time for each project, so please get them in on time. Given the schedule, we foresee little chance of granting extensions in project due dates. Delays in submission will imply significantly reduced credit (maximum of 2 points out of 10) for both team members.

You must submit all projects, even if you do so after the project due date, to be able to pass this course.

Optional Homework (extra credit 10%)

There will be an optional homework assignment that will be released midway through the semester, which can fetch you up to 10% extra credit in this class. You can submit the homework up to a week before the announced final exam window (of 5 days) starts. This is a hard deadline; no submissions beyond this date will be accepted.

Policy on missed exams

You must have a pressing reason (such as a proven medical cause or conflicting exam in another course) to miss a scheduled mid-term or final examination. Make-up examinations may be taken if you have notified the instructor at least two weeks prior to the original examination that you will not be able to attend. If you miss an examination due to an unforeseen emergency, you may take a make-up examination only after providing written documentation of a reason that is acceptable to the instructor.

Disputing grades

You may not dispute a grade before 24 hours or after 7 days of receiving it. The class instructors will only consider reasonable requests to regrade parts of projects or exams during a 6-day period after the release of each project or exam grade.
