Telnet
Layer 7 application. Test all 7 layers for connectivity to remote host
Ping
Layer 3 ICMP packets - sends echo requests to remote host. waits for echo replys
gives round trip time. ! good packet, .. no response, U unreachable host
Trace
Layer 3, similar to ping, gives list of all routers in the path. * mean unreachable host
show interface serial
displays info for serial ports. tells whether or not there is a Layer 1 and Layer 2 connections
Serial0 is up, line protocol is up
Serial0 is up, line protocol is down
Serial0 is down, line protocol is down
Serial0 administratively down, line protocol down
Debug
Privileged EXEC mode, allows real time updates on the system. Creates lots of overhead and can slow down router
