Problem with emacs fonts under X

If you run emacs under X, and the window comes up very wide and the fonts look all messed up, look in your .Xdefaults file. You probably have a line something like 
     emacs*font:	*-courier-bold-r-normal-*-*-140-*
This means use this font for the program named emacs. You need to add a line for the specific emacs you are running, like 
     emacs18*font:	*-courier-bold-r-normal-*-*-140-*
or 
     emacs19*font:	*-courier-bold-r-normal-*-*-140-*
