Obtaining accounts on systems maintained by LCSR-CF
Obtaining accounts on systems maintained by LCSR-CF
There are generally up to three steps to get someone an account (that
is, a login ID and associated password) on a system administered by
the
LCSR Computing Facility staff.
-
The person needing the account should be in the
Rutgers People Database.
Rutgers maintains a
directory
of information about people somehow
associated with the University.
If the person is an employee or student at Rutgers, this step is
probably unnecessary.
Private information contained in that directory is used in the next
step.
(The person sponsoring the account request should
confirm the request to be added to the PDB.)
-
The person should have or obtain a
Rutgers NetID.
This will become the person's username and/or email address.
If the person already has a Unix account somewhere at Rutgers, this
step is probably unnecessary.
(The person
needs to be in the PDB
before being able to
get a NetID.)
-
One or more
specific accounts
should be requested for the person.
We have several different types of accounts available:
- Unix command line accounts (eg, faculty, research or student login
accounts);
- LCSR domain accounts
(for authentication of all public Mac and Windows machines within DCS
as well as mounting of DCS faculty, research or grad unix files on
Macs and PCs)
- email accounts (on a special email server).
Note: once someone has an account on one of the faculty, research
or graduate Unix machines, they can create their own email account by
going to the email server at
https://dragon.rutgers.edu/
and clicking on the "Make Account" button.
(This request should be made by the sponsoring user and can be sent at
the same time as the
confirmation of the request to be added to the PDB.)
